Fitness Basics: You are never too advanced for the Basics

In today’s world of trends + viral hacks, it can feel like we are always searching for that *one thing* we’re missing.

When we aren’t seeing the immediate results we want, it’s a natural impulse to want to search for the magic pill. We’ve convinced ourselves that there is a secret that other people know that we don’t know. So we try keto and waist trainers. Then we try juice cleansing and fat burner pills. Then we go vegan and start our day with celery juice. Then we try fasted cardio. Then we try intermittent fasting and the carnivore diet. Then we do 75 hard. Then we try “this one move” we saw on instagram that the creator said “snatched her waist.”

Stop the search. Get back to the basics.

I’ve been in the fitness industry for 13 years. I have seen it all and I have a secret that influencers don’t want you to know… there is no magic pill. There is no “hack.” There is not ONE exercise you’re missing. Anything that promises quick results is rooted in unsustainable habits that won’t lead to long-term success, or is simply made for likes/follows and has no scientific evidence to back up the claims.

Stop trying to reinvent the wheel. The basics WORK and they are backed by scientific evidence. Don’t waste your time + energy trying every new fad or hack you see on social media.

Focus your time and energy on practicing these 5 basic habits that have been robustly studied:

  • 75-300 minutes of physical activity/week (depending on intensity)

  • Strength training at least 2x/week

  • Prioritizing fruits, vegetables, lean protein, healthy fats, and whole grains

  • Improving quality of Sleep (8-10 hours)

  • Reducing stress

  • Increasing movement and reducing sedentary time (8k steps per day)

Just because they are basic, does not make them easy. You are never too advanced for the basics.
