Is Hiring a Personal Trainer Worth It?

It is hard to deny the benefits of working out and living a healthier lifestyle, but the question is, is hiring a personal trainer worth it? In my honest opinion, Yes. Everyone can benefit from working with a personal trainer at some point in their lifetime. So How much do they cost? How do you find the best ones? Can you do it on your own? What should you expect when hiring a personal trainer? These are just some of the questions that we're going to explore.

Benefits of Personal Training

Choosing to go the personal trainer route to achieve your fitness goals is an investment that is important to your overall health, wellness, and life. Here are just a few of the benefits that you get with a Personal Trainer.

  • Customized programming: A well-educated and experienced trainer will customize a program for you and your specific goals. They’ll also be able to take into account any special considerations (e.g. Pregnancy, injuries, limitations due to existing medical issues, or medications being taken)

  • Correct technique & Form: Here at Ladies Who Lift, we are all about proper form over anything. If you are not performing a movement with proper form adding weight is not the answer. A trainer will teach you the proper mechanics and how to execute each movement in real-time. This will ultimately maximize your workout efficiency.

  • Enhance motivation & accountability: Having a scheduled session and someone that you need to show up for besides yourself can help you stay consistent and be your other hype person. A trainer can also remind you of the importance and keep you looking at the positive side of working out.

  • Alleviate boredom: Contrary to what you might think a session is and can be fun! A trainer will help choose and plan the exercises that you enjoy doing and that will keep you challenged. A trainer has a vast variety of exercises, tools, and techniques to always work towards reaching your goals.

What To Expect From a Personal Trainer

A good rapport between trainer and client is important between both parties and takes time to build. A trainer is someone who you are putting your trust in and expecting their knowledge and experience to take you to the next level in your fitness goals. Be sure to be open and honest with your trainer, after all, they are there to help you.

During your first initial session, your trainer should and will take the time to get to know you. This information along with your trainer’s expertise and experience will assist them in developing a customized program for you.

Once your first session is completed and any issues or limitations are confirmed your trainer will design a plan for you and plan your next training sessions. So get ready to show up, give them your best and trust the process.

Types of Training Options

In today’s world, we have choices of how we can get our training from professionals. Let's explore the pros and cons of In-Person, Online, and Small Group Training.

In-Person Personal Training

If you are not intrinsically motivated to get up on your own and go to the gym, I would suggest in-person training.

Pros

  • You have the 1:1 attention

  • Receive instant clarification on movements and form

  • Custom workout to meet your needs

Cons

  • The cost per session can get expensive

  • Less flexibility

  • Travel time to and from sessions

Online Personal Training

Since almost everyone has access to a computer or phone, online training is becoming a more popular option!

Pros

  • Instant access to a program

  • Can be done anywhere

  • Train on your own schedule

Cons

  • No form checks in real-time

  • May not be suitable for people who need more hands-on attention

  • Less external motivation and accountability

Small Group Personal Training

Small Group Personal Training is a  good old fashion way of getting to the gym and meeting like-minded people.

Pros

  • Affordable

  • Interaction with others

  • A variety of workouts are available

Cons

  • Strict Schedule and times

  • No personalized workouts

  • No 1:1 attention

What To Look For In A Personal Trainer

Not all trainers are created equal. Do some research, ask friends who have used trainers & don't be afraid to ask your gym questions on who would be a good fit.

Communication

A good trainer should be someone to who you feel comfortable talking about your strengths, weaknesses, and fears about the fitness world. It should be a two-way street of listening to your needs and providing their expertise.

Experience

Find someone with the proper qualifications. They should hold a professional certification or a speciality certification for what you are looking for. I wouldn’t go to a yoga instructor to teach me how to box. There are a lot of influencers who are not trainers and provide misguided information. Be careful who you are receiving information from!
